But as the Queen has retreated to Balmoral Castle for her annual summer break and reduced her daily engagements, her grandchildren have stepped up to support her.
Ahead of the start of the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge sent a message of support for the athletes.
They wrote on Twitter: “Wishing @ParalympicsGB and all the athletes from around the world the best of luck in this year’s #Paralympics.
“We can’t wait to see the talent and skill displayed over the next two weeks #ImpossibleToIgnore”.
Cambridges and Zara Tindall show support for Queen
William and Kate unite behind the Queen
Despite on her retreat, the Queen continues to carry out the day-to-day duties of a UK head of state – including receiving the Government’s red box.
But she is believed not to be spending her summer retreat alone.
Zara Tindall – the daughter of Princess Anne – and her husband Mike Tindall are believed to have joined the Queen during her Balmoral retreat.
According to reports, the monarch was spotted having a picnic with some of her great-grandchildren this week.
The Queen is said to have enjoyed an al fresco lunch at Glen Muick with either Peter Phillip’s children or Zara and Mike’s daughters.
The Cambridges are not the only members of the Royal Family to wish the Paralympians good luck during the games.
Prince Edward shared a witty and poignant message to Team GB athletes via the Royal Family’s official social media accounts.
As the patron of the Great Britain and Northern Ireland Paralympic team, the Earl of Wessex told the athletes on Friday: “As the moment this year’s Paralympic Games in Tokyo gets ever closer to actually getting underway, I want to wish you the very best of luck.”
The Earl of Wessex noted these Paralympics will be very different from any past edition of the Games due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
The rules in place in Tokyo to curb the spread of COVID-19 mean no members of the public can watch the athletes in person – much like it happened for the Olympics a few weeks ago.
However, Prince Edward urged Team GB athletes not to be discouraged by these changes.
Princess Anne, an Olympian herself and patron of Team GB at the Olympics, expressed her sadness at the impossibility of accompanying the athletes to Tokyo before recalling how unforgettable an experience at the Olympic Games can be.

Media correspondent Neil Sean claimed the move would be a “big mistake” from the broadcaster and would not “bode well” for the Queen.
Commentator Neil Sean said: “It appears that the BBC can do no right with the British Royal Family, as we told you before on this channel, the BBC recently had to pay out £1.7million over the Bashir-Diana scandal.

Tony Blair was so furious about Prince Charles’ behaviour during his time in Downing Street that he complained about him to Queen Elizabeth II, political strategist Alastair Campbell suggested in his diaries.
The royals are expected to understand that party politics and individual politicians are off-limits for public comment.
The monarchy’s website states: “As head of state, the Queen has to remain strictly neutral with respect to political matters.” By convention, other members of the family have to follow suit.

Hopes that the Cambridges and Sussexes would work together as a “Fab Four” turned into a “disaster” according to a royal expert.
Speaking to Entertainment Daily, Richard Fitzwilliams said: “The ‘Fab Four’ idea, that William and Catherine and Harry and Meghan would work together despite their different roles and personalities was a disaster. But no one predicted it.
“Harry now believes he was trapped as a member of the Royal Family, and that William currently is but doesn’t know it.
“The rift between them, long reported and first confirmed in the ITV documentary about their South Africa trip, is public and serious.
“It was his marriage to Meghan which unquestionably changed him.”

Members of the Royal Family were “quietly pleased” Meghan Markle did not attend Prince Philip’s funeral, an unauthorised biography has claimed.
The Duchess of Sussex was heavily pregnant with her and Prince Harry’s daughter Lili when the Duke of Edinburgh’s funeral took place in April and was advised against flying by doctors.
Finding Freedom cites a senior royal source as saying some members of the Royal Family were “quietly pleased” Meghan did not attend as they “didn’t want a circus” or the Duchess “creating a spectacle”.
The claim is made in a new epilogue to the book by Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand which is set to be republished on August 23.
According to the Independent, the biography says: “In truth, several members of the Royal Family are understood to have been ‘quietly pleased’ that Meghan stayed in California because they ‘didn’t want a circus’ or, commented one senior royal source, ‘the Duchess creating a spectacle’.”
The Sussexes have previously distanced themselves from the unauthorised book.

Kate and Prince William are particularly keen on educating their three children on a key aspect of royal life.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are very careful to teach Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis good manners, according to a royal insider.
The couple insist on educating their children on this to make sure good manners become a habit for their little ones, the source said.
They told the Sun: “Table manners, thank you letters, little courtesies are being drilled into the children so they become automatic.”

2.50pm update: Prince Harry’s wreath for Remembrance Sunday ‘remained in its box’ – Finding Freedom claim
The wreath Prince Harry sent to England to be laid on his behalf at the Cenotaph last November “remained in its box” throughout Remembrance Sunday, authors of the biography Finding Freedom have claimed.
Authors Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand weighed into claims first emerged in November last year as senior royals gathered in London to attend a socially distanced National Service of Remembrance.
At the time, the Sunday Times claims Prince Harry had been refused the opportunity to have a wreath of red poppies laid on his behalf at the Cenotaph.
The author of the unauthorised biography of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have now claimed in an updated version of their bestseller book the wreath reportedly sent by Prince Harry to London never left the Royal British Legion’s headquarters.
They wrote: “But as the day came and went, Harry’s gesture remained in its box at the charity’s headquarters in Kent.”

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have been criticised by Nigel Farage for conducting a bombshell interview whilst Prince Philip was “on his deathbed”.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been slammed by Nigel Farage and royal commentator Robert Jobson, for conducting their bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey whilst Prince Philip was unwell in hospital.
Mr Jobson accused the couple of “burning the British flag” by attacking the Royal Family, despite the Queen’s husband being “on his death bed”.
In a conversation on GB News, former UKIP leader Nigel Farage said: “What really upset me was when they gave that interview to Oprah, they knew that the Duke of Edinburgh was on his death bed. Yet they still went ahead.”

The Daily Mail’s diary editor Richard Eden claimed the convoy of cars travelled 1,020-mile on a round trip from the Royal Lodge in Windsor, where the Duke of York lives, to Deeside in Scotland.
All three vehicles, the commentator added, belonged to Andrew and carried his personalized number plates.
One of the cars reportedly taken to Scotland by the Duke of York was a new petrol-powered Land Rover Defender, costing more than £53,000.
The second car was a Land Rover Discovery, with a price tag higher than £51,000.
11am update: Prince Charles to face key constitutional issue with Camilla when he becomes king
Prince Charles would have to “change the law” to declare Camilla as Princess consort, rather than the traditional title of Queen consort.
When Prince Charles succeeds the Queen to the throne, he will face an “issue” regarding the title of his wife Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall.
Before the couple’s wedding in 2005, it was announced that Camilla Parker-Bowles would be made Princess consort when her husband became king, but a royal expert has stated that this would have to become an Act through Parliament first.
Speaking to GB News, royal expert Robert Jobson said: “It’s an issue at the moment but the Prince of Wales becomes king straight away as we know, and in my opinion, the Princess isn’t going to be a Princess, the Duchess will be made Queen Consort straight away.
“Unless if you change the law in Britain and the Parliament do an Act to do that, that is what’s going to happen.”
Princess Diana with Prince William and Harry
10.30am update: Princess Diana musical announcement stuns Twitter users – ‘Treated like a freakshow’
A new retelling of Princess Diana’s life is to be released on Netflix in October.
Netflix announced on Twitter it will release Diana: The Musical on October 1.
The show was meant to hit New York’s Broadway stage in March 2020, but its launch had to be put on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Now it is expected to debut live in early November 2021 – a few weeks after the release of its filmed theatre performance on the US streaming giant.
News of the Netflix release was shared by the official Twitter account NetflixFilm earlier this week when it listed a series of upcoming shows on the on-demand platform.
10am update: ‘Nonsense’ Meghan and Harry ‘contradicted themselves’ – Jobson & Farage challenge Sussexes
Royal editor Robert Jobson and GB News presenter Nigel Farage both cast doubts on the Sussexes over the “contradictions” in their Oprah Winfrey interview, with Mr Farage taking a strong dislike to the interview being so close to Prince Phillip being in hospital.
Mr Jobson took particular offence to the suggestion the Royal Family were “racist” amid claims there were concerned conversations about baby Archie’s skin colour.
The pair did not hold back in their condemnation of the Sussexes as Mr Farage said the couple were able to exploit the situation by getting their story out first before the Royal Family could respond.
Mr Jobson explained: “I’m getting a feeling when I’m doing a lot of work in America they genuinely believe some of this racist bunkum.”
Mr Farage agreed and said the Sussexes had a “mover advantage” as they could get their story out first without the royals being able to respond.

During the interview Meghan made claims someone within the Royal Family had asked what skin colour Archie would have.
8.45am update: ‘Just like us’: Kate Middleton’s parenting sets ‘great example’ but ‘definitely unusual’
Kate and William will often be seen holding the children’s hands or picking them up for a cuddle.
Previously, affection towards children would have been frowned upon within the Royal Family.
According to one expert, protocol within the family could be “evolving” and “softening”.
Speaking to Express.co.uk, Danielle Haig, Principal Psychologist from DH Consulting, said: “The overt affection that William and Kate show towards their children is most definitely unusual for the British Royal Family.
“But my, how wonderful it is to see.
“As a psychologist, it is well known that children need to feel affection, love and safety from their parents to truly thrive and be happy in life.
“To be kept at an arm’s length and not shown affection as a child, can have all sorts of negative impacts on a child psychologically and emotionally.”
Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle
8.10am update: ‘Stretching the imagination’ Kate and Meghan’s Netflix collaboration unlikely – expert
Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle’s possible Netflix collaboration is “stretching the imagination”, a royal biographer has claimed.
Stewart Pearce, author of Diana: The Voice of Change, spoke to US Weekly about Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle’s current relationship.
However, when asked by US Weekly correspondent Joe Drake about possible rumours of Meghan and Kate working on a Netflix documentary, Mr Pearce said the roles of the pair do not “correspond”.
He said: “I think it’s stretching the imagination.
“What’s happening is we are seeing they both have very clearly defined roles, they do not correspond.
“Now what I mean by that I don’t mean as women within the family. I don’t mean as the wives of these two extraordinary princes.
“I’m talking about the statement they are making individually as women, but Kate has her own specific role, which is very different from the way Meghan has her own specific role, that’s what I said with it.”
